Why We Started Social Connections
Social Connections was created out of the desire to help young adults with disabilities begin navigating the dating process. The first group class took place in the summer of 2021 and then it grew from there. Since this first class, co-founders Kate Deitzer and Missy Shaw uncovered many more needs that these young adults experience.
Kate and Missy have known each other since 1995 when Kate, principal at the time, hired Missy to begin her career as a teacher at the Psychiatric Hospital of Vanderbilt.
Post their time at Vanderbilt Missy and Kate have remained close colleagues and friends.
Both Kate and Missy are passionate about improving the lives of their clients through individual and group settings. Techniques frequently used are role playing, modeling, goal setting, and coaching to address the many areas of concern
for each client individually.
